Students from the University of Malawi (UNIMA) recently demonstrated their legal prowess on the international stage at the 15th Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition, held at the prestigious Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

Representing UNIMA, Mr. Bentry Nyondo, a 3rd-year student, and Miss Teuka Tembo, a 4th-year student, both from the Department of Public Law and Clinical Legal Education in the School of Law, Economics, and Government, made their mark among the best law students globally.

UNIMA was proud to be among the top six universities in Africa to qualify for this esteemed competition. The journey to Geneva began with over fifty universities worldwide, each submitting rigorous written arguments.

Excelling through these preliminary stages, the UNIMA team advanced to the Round of 16, showcasing their exceptional legal skills.

Celebrating Excellence and Global Exposure

On July 24th, 2023, Mr. Nyondo and Miss Tembo returned to a warm welcome at Chileka Airport in Blantyre, marking their success in the global competition.

Reflecting on their experience, Mr. Nyondo emphasized the honor of competing against some of the world’s most talented law students. He credited their success to the robust legal education and advocacy training they received at UNIMA.

“The Geneva experience was not just about competition,” Nyondo shared. “It was a phenomenal networking opportunity, connecting us with some of the leading figures in the global legal profession.”

Dr. Enoch Chilemba, a Senior Law lecturer and the faculty representative who accompanied the students, praised their outstanding performance. “Their success is a testament to the quality of education we provide at UNIMA,”

Dr. Chilemba stated, reinforcing the university’s commitment to academic excellence.

UNIMA’s Commitment to Quality Education

Professor Happy Kayuni, the Executive Dean of the School of Law, Economics, and Government, also extended his congratulations to Mr. Nyondo and Miss Tembo. He highlighted that their achievement reaffirms the high standards of UNIMA’s educational programs, both on a local and international scale.

“The performance of our students at the Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition clearly demonstrates that UNIMA is delivering education of the highest quality, equipping our students to excel on the world stage,” Professor Kayuni noted.

The Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition is a prestigious annual event organized by the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria.

It gathers top universities from all five United Nations regions to debate a challenging hypothetical case on global human rights issues. This competition not only tests students’ legal acumen but also provides them with a platform to engage with complex human rights issues and contribute to global legal discourse.
