One of the defining qualities of University of Malawi (UNIMA) students is their exceptional ability to articulate complex ideas with clarity and precision.

Regardless of their field of study, UNIMA students consistently demonstrate a mastery of the English language, crafting well-argued essays that stand out on both national and international stages.

This excellence was recently exemplified by Julius Mundewele Banda, a fourth-year Bachelor of Education student majoring in Chemistry at UNIMA.

On July 31, 2023, Julius was announced as the national winner of the 10th ARSO Continental Essay Competition, an esteemed contest organized by the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) in collaboration with the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO) and AMC Group Africa.

A Triumph in National and Continental Competition

The ARSO Continental Essay Competition is a highly competitive event that attracts participants from across Africa.

This year’s theme, “The Role of Standardization in Promoting the Growth of Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises for Sustainable, Inclusive, and Diversified Industrial and Economic Development in Africa,” challenged students to explore the critical role that standards play in fostering economic growth.

Julius’s essay stood out among entries from across Malawi, showcasing his ability to effectively organize complex ideas and conduct thorough research.

His work was evaluated by a panel of esteemed judges from Mzuzu University, the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), National Bank of Malawi, and the Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Development Institute (SMEDI).

The judges were particularly impressed with how Julius meticulously aligned his essay with the competition’s theme, demonstrating a deep understanding of the subject matter.

Recognizing Academic Excellence

The prize presentation ceremony was held at Crossroads Hotel in Blantyre, where Julius was honored for his outstanding achievement.

Reflecting on his success, Julius credited the rigorous training he received at UNIMA for his ability to produce a compelling and well-researched essay. He highlighted that the writing and research skills honed at UNIMA enabled him to stand out among the 56 participants.

“The education I’ve received at UNIMA has been instrumental in developing my ability to research thoroughly and present my ideas in a clear, logical manner,” Julius stated. “This competition was a great opportunity to apply what I’ve learned and to contribute to an important discussion about economic development in Africa.”

For his remarkable achievement, Julius received a prestigious award package that included a certificate signed by the MBS General Director, Dr. Bernard Thole, a medal, and a cash prize of K250,000.00.
